For those that remained single forever, did you regret?
Popular comment · I’m coming up on nine years single. My last relationship ended when I moved to take care of my dad, who was dying of cancer. My long-term partner at the time broke things off and called me selfish for going, even though I offered to move her with me. Getting back out there afterward was tough just like many people here describe. It used to bother me, but over time I’ve genuinely become happy on my own. There’s something valuable about feeling content and comfortable with your own company. I’ve heard people say that some are simply meant to be alone, and honestly, at 45 (M), that idea doesn’t really bother me anymore.

Have you ever decided to just throw in the towel and accept being single?
I don’t mean this in a depressing sense. I mean at what point do you decide to just stop looking for a relationship entirely and accept that you’ll be okay alone (forever potentially)? And what do you do to fully get to that point?
I feel as if I’m almost at that point. But I have setbacks. I’ve done a lot of online dating – even pre covid. As an introvert it’s always been my main and generally sole method of finding people. I find that my mood is stable and I’m overall a content person. I enjoy my work and I have a few low key hobbies. The only thing that brings my mood down, strangely and rather consistency, is dating. That’s why I’m really wanting to reach the point of just accepting that dating and romantic relationships just aren’t meant for me. Is there anyone else out there who feels an acceptable with being perpetually single. Not a resignation to it. But a genuine contentment? Because I honestly believe it’s possible.
Edit to add a few of the current things that weigh on my mind:
-
how to answer people when they ask if you’re married/ have kids/ etc and when you say ‘nope single as a Pringle :)’ they offer advice or condolences lol.
-
how to hang out with friends/coworkers who drag partners to everything and you’re alone. It just feels.. awkward. I need some better ways to react to this.
