15-amp vs. 20-amp outlets differ in their amperage capacity (15A vs. 20A), visual appearance (15A is two vertical slots; 20A has a T-shaped slot for 20A plugs), and typical use (15A for general use, 20A for high-draw appliances like in kitchens/garages). The key safety rule is you can use 15A receptacles on a 20A circuit (with multiple outlets), but never a 20A receptacle on a 15A circuit, as a 20A plug could overload the 14-gauge wires on a 15A circuit.

Key Differences
Amperage: 15A handles up to 1800 watts; 20A handles up to 2400 watts.
Appearance: 15A has two vertical slots; 20A has a T-shaped slot (one vertical, one horizontal) plus the ground.
Plug Compatibility: 20A plugs (with the T-blade) fit into both 15A and 20A receptacles; 15A plugs fit only into 15A or 20A receptacles.
Wiring: 15A circuits use 14-gauge wire; 20A circuits use 12-gauge wire.

When to Use Which
15-Amp: Standard for general-purpose areas like bedrooms, living rooms, or circuits with many outlets.
20-Amp: Required for kitchens, garages, laundry rooms, or any circuit dedicated to a single, high-power appliance like a microwave or air compressor.
Important Safety Rule
You can put a 15A receptacle on a 20A circuit (if there are multiple outlets).
You cannot put a 20A receptacle on a 15A circuit because a powerful device could overload the thinner 14-gauge wires, creating a fire hazard.

You can never protect against what someone may do
Someone may decide to put 250w halogens in the garage instead of my lights
500w mercury vapor lights as outdoor lights
I was actually surprised that I had close to 100
I also walked around while eating a sandwich
Or like me they may have 125a of Christmas decorations they put up
Protecting aginst what someone may do would be no more then 18 100w fixtures on a 15a 1800w circuit
I’d need 5 dedicated lighting circuits instead of 2 (my 3rd has dining room outlets)
I have enough circuits so every light in my house can be on at the same time – including outside, basement & garage lights
50% could be upgraded to 100w incandescents & still turn them all on
With the 30% reduction required in incandescent use I coudl replace 75% with the newer lower energy incandescents & still not have a problem
Even with a party & a bunch of friends over we don’t have all the lights on
So you need to balance the number of circuits against use
I have 40 MR16 LED bulbs (32 led’s) that use less then 2w each – pretty bright
I will be installing the throught the house on a dedicated circuit – they run off 12.6v
So to light up most of my house I will be using less then 80w – if they are all on at the same time
