Who are the Doom Patrol?

Steve Dayton, the one of the world’s richest men, makes his mind up one day to woo movie star-cum-superhero Rita Farr aka Elasti-Girl, and so, in addition to training his mind and body to peak condition, he builds for himself the Mento helmet, a device that imbues upon him vast mental powers including telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, and many others.

Despite earning the ire of the male members of the Doom Patrol with his vast arrogance, nevertheless he succeeds in his goal of winning over Rita, and the two are married. Though he avoids officially joining the Doom Patrol for some time due to his conflicts with Robotman and Negative Man, he joins them on many adventures and his ties to the team are only strengthened when he and Rita adopt Beast Boy after helping disentangle him from the avaricious grip of his less-than-loving legal guardian.

Over time, the Mento helmet proves to have deleterious effects on Steve, including leading to his insanity during a seance with John Constantine and enhancing his own natural paranoia and neuroses until he threatens the country with a series of nuclear bombs.

Eventually healed, however, and his helmet seemingly fixed, Steve Dayton went on to reunite a version of the original Doom Patrol after a rather circuitous history and even found himself leader of the team he was at first reluctant to join. In many ways, however, Mento makes a better leader for the team than Niles Cauler, because at least his arrogance and other flaws are completely on the surface.

It’s November, so let’s resume last year’s festivities of celebrating Arnold Drake and Bruno Premiani’s Doom Patrol for the rest of the month by using and checking the hashtag #doomsgiving!
